The Shasta Land Trust announced Friday, March 30, that an agreement to purchase the railroad right-of-way between McCloud and Burney has been signed. This agreement will pave the way for the planning and development of 80 miles of rail-trail connecting the two communities and providing access to a number of nearby attractions. The trail will preserve an historic and scenic railroad corridor and protect the surrounding natural environment, aquatic wildlife, and habitat.
Shasta Land Trust (SLT), representing a coalition of Northern California nonprofit organizations including McCloud Local First Network, signed an agreement to purchase a railroad right-of-way between McCloud (in Siskiyou County) and Burney (in Shasta County), a property known as the McCloud Railway. The agreement, signed by SLT and the property’s owner, 4 Rails, Inc, will ultimately lead to establishment of a public “rail-trail” on the property and is an important milestone following many years of efforts by several local non-profit organizations and 4 Rails.
Thirty-five dog and/or pony-featuring groups were featured in this year's Dog and Pony Show Parade. Bright sunshine, hot cider, and a lively crowd made watching the parade a real treat!
For pictures of all the parade participants - and some of the large audience - click on "Gallery" (on the menu above) and choose the Dog and Pony Show. We've photos from the last three events posted there!
The Great Exchange, now a non-profit organization, is looking for donations... and customers. Offering quality used clothing and locally-made crafts, the store will use proceeds to support sustainable community building.
McCloud's newest store, the Great Exchange, has converted to non-profit status. Angelina Cook, the Board's President, said that "the proceeds from the "thrifty shop" operations will be used to promote sustainable community building." Ms. Cook explained that "We are drawing upon a diverse base of local talents and assets to present a series of workshops designed to enhance local self-reliance and sustainable economy by increasing skills for self-sufficiency and natural resource stewardship to stimulate green job creation in the region."
Down town McCloud will be alive with vendors, musicians, and events when the Heritage Junction Museum again sponsors Heritage Days. The Melodrama depicting stories from McCloud's history is always the highlight of this celebration - you'll find it performed on the stage above the Museum.
